Transcribing audio recordings has got to be one of the most tedious things you could do, but not if you have the right tools at your disposal. An excellent example is NCH's Express Scribe Transcription Software, which lets you control the playback speed of your recordings, manage them and much more. The software looks quite simple on the surface, but it packs quite a few features which you will definitely find useful.

You can opt between free and paid versions, depending on what features you want to have. Regardless of which one you pick, you won't have to spend more than a minute downloading and installing the program. It works on all modern Windows platforms, and it doesn't require any third-party codecs or drivers.

The way the user interface is designed allows you to get started right away without delay. You can load your recordings on its upper half and play back selected items and write down what you hear on the lower half. There you will also find two sliders for changing the volume level, as well as the playback speed. The playback position indicator is quite sensitive and easy to move around, so if you fall behind, you can return to any section of the recording without struggling against preset increments.

Of course, Express Scribe is more than just a glorified audio player with speed controls. It comes with other useful features which simplify the transcription process. For example, the software provides full support for foot pedal controllers, which gives you the possibility of pausing and resuming the playback without lifting your fingers from the keyboard. Furthermore, the program can make use of third-party speech to text engines, like SAPI, to automatically create a draft of a transcript. As a result, you will only need to go over the text and correct minor mistakes, instead of writing the whole transcript from scratch.

When it comes to transcribing audio recordings, Express Scribe Transcription Software does everything to make the process as simple and easy as possible.

Pros

You can control the playback speed to transcribe at your own pace. The software supports foot pedal controllers. It can also make use of speech to text engines to create the first draft for you.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to point out.
